We are incredibly proud to be an active part of the national PiedFly.Net. Through this collaboration, our local monitoring at Clatworthy contributes to vital, large-scale scientific studies of hole-nesting birds.
Pied Flycatchers are long-distance migrants, traveling all the way from western Africa to breed in our upland woodlands. Because they rely heavily on established tree cavities and increasingly on managed nest boxes tracking their breeding success provides crucial data on how environmental and climate changes are impacting migratory bird populations.
Every spring and summer, our team of volunteers helps maintain, monitor, and record data from the network of nest boxes around the reservoir. From documenting the first eggs of the season to working alongside licensed bird ringers, the information we gather feeds directly into national conservation databases (like the British Trust for Ornithology). It’s practical conservation work with a genuine scientific impact.
